Professor Xiang Zhang is President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, where he leads the university’s mission to build a vibrant intellectual community grounded in curiosity, critical thinking, and compassionate values. A world-renowned scholar in nanophotonics and materials physics, he is best known for developing the first optical superlens, pioneering plasmonic lithography, and inventing the world’s first optical “invisibility cloak,” recognized by TIME as one of the Top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2008. Before joining HKU, he held senior academic and research leadership roles at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His honors include the Fitzroy Medal, Julius Springer Prize, Max Born Award, and Eringen Medal. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of leading academies including the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academia Sinica.
